Fairtrade yarn

What is Fairtrade yarn
Fairtrade is sustainable yarn with a clear conscience and social responsibility. Fairtrade yarns are often produced in small cooperative farms where they are run by village women.

The purpose of Fairtrade is to ensure that women, in particular, can maintain an income that supports their families. This allows children to attend school, and families are not forced to seek work in the big cities, but can remain in their villages and make a living by farming the land and caring for animals. The yarn is often produced according to old handicraft traditions, which means that the treatment of the yarn is gentle. This benefits both the yarn and the environment.

The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) monitors and supports the production of Fairtrade yarn.

Well-known brands in sustainable yarn are Manos del Uruguay and Cowgirlblues.
